Why I Founded VCMO by Paul Mills
My purpose is helping businesses grow through better marketing leadership and stronger strategic choices.
My Journey to VCMO
For more than twenty years, I've worked with organisations navigating complex commercial challenges. I've launched medical technologies, supported global brands, advised leadership teams, led marketing transformations and helped businesses through periods of growth, acquisition and change.
Different sectors. Different markets. Different challenges.
Yet one pattern kept emerging. Businesses rarely struggled because they weren't doing enough marketing. They struggled because marketing lacked strategic leadership.
Campaigns were running. Budgets were being spent. Agencies were busy.
But leadership teams often couldn't answer the questions that mattered most.
"Is marketing helping us grow?"
"Are we investing in the right priorities?"
"Can we demonstrate commercial impact?"
"Is everyone pulling in the same direction?"
That's the problem I set out to solve when I founded VCMO. Not by creating another marketing agency. But by giving organisations access to experienced strategic marketing leadership—when and where they need it most.

A career built around complex business challenges
My career hasn't followed the traditional path into marketing. I began in analytical chemistry before moving into the medical device industry, where I worked alongside surgeons introducing pioneering cardiovascular technologies into NHS hospitals.
It was an environment where evidence mattered, decisions carried real consequences and commercial success depended on building trust with highly technical and informed stakeholders.
Those lessons have stayed with me throughout my career. Since then I've held senior marketing and commercial leadership roles across a wide range of complex B2B organisations, including Johnson & Johnson, Grant Thornton, KPMG and DAS UK Group.
I've worked across regulated industries, professional and financial services, automotive, healthcare, insurance and SaaS. What these organisations shared wasn't their sector. It was the need to make better commercial decisions.
Again and again I saw marketing perform at its best when it had a clear strategic role within the leadership team—not simply responsibility for campaigns or communications.

Why fractional leadership makes obvious sense
I know from first-hand experience that not every organisation needs a full-time Chief Marketing Officer. But many reach a point where they need more than tactical marketing support. They need someone who can bring strategic clarity, challenge assumptions, align leadership teams and ensure marketing contributes to wider business objectives.
That's where fractional leadership creates real value. It gives organisations access to experienced executive expertise without the cost or commitment of a permanent board appointment. For many growing businesses, it's exactly the right model at exactly the right time.
VCMO was built around that belief.
Today we help founders, CEOs, leadership teams, investors and private equity-backed businesses strengthen marketing leadership, improve commercial alignment and create the foundations for sustainable growth.

A framework for better growth decisions
One of the things I've learned over the years is that growth problems are rarely caused by marketing alone. They're usually the result of several interconnected issues: Strategy; Leadership; Capability; Alignment; Measurement; Decision making.
That's why I developed VCMO's proprietary GROWTH™ Framework. Rather than focusing purely on marketing activity, it helps leadership teams understand the organisational capabilities that influence long-term commercial success.
Today it's used through our GROWTH™ Marketing Diagnostic, helping businesses benchmark their growth capability before deciding what support they actually need.
→ Sometimes that leads to a marketing audit.
→ Sometimes a strategy workshop.
→ Sometimes mentoring.
→ Sometimes ongoing Fractional CMO support.
And sometimes it simply gives leadership teams greater confidence in the decisions they're already making. For me, that's a successful outcome.

Helping Shape the Future of Fractional Leadership
Founding VCMO was never the end of the journey. It became the platform for a much broader mission. I believe fractional leadership represents one of the most significant changes in how organisations access senior executive expertise.
As demand continues to grow, the discipline also needs stronger standards, better education and greater awareness. That's why I'm proud to contribute beyond my client work.
Today I serve as a Board Member and Chief Marketing Officer of the Fractional Leadership Alliance, the international organisation dedicated to advancing professional standards and promoting best practice across the global fractional leadership profession.
I'm also co-founder of FindaFractional®, a platform created to make it easier for organisations to discover and engage experienced fractional leaders after our independent research highlighted just how fragmented the market had become.
Alongside this, I host the Fractional Futures Podcast, where I speak with founders, business leaders and fellow fractional executives about the future of leadership, business growth and the changing world of work.
Whether I'm advising a client, publishing research or contributing to the wider profession, the purpose is the same. To help organisations make better marketing and leadership decisions.

My approach
Clients don't engage VCMO because they want more marketing activity. They engage us because they want greater clarity.
They want someone who will:
✓ Ask difficult questions.
✓ Challenge assumptions.
✓ Bring an independent perspective.
✓ Help leadership teams make informed commercial decisions.
✓ And ensure marketing becomes a strategic contributor to growth rather than simply another business function.
That's the role I enjoy most. Not being the loudest voice in the room. But helping leadership teams ask better questions—and find better answers.
