Helping raise the standard of strategic marketing leadership
VCMO was never created to become another marketing consultancy or agency.
It was founded with a much broader ambition: to help organisations access experienced strategic marketing leadership and to raise the standards of the fractional marketing profession.
Today, that mission extends beyond VCMO itself through industry research, the GROWTH™ Framework, the Fractional Futures Podcast, FindaFractional® and active leadership within the Fractional Leadership Alliance.
The VCMO Associate Network brings together experienced Fractional CMOs who share that same ambition.
❌ It is not a recruitment agency.
❌ This is not a freelance directory.
❌ It is not a lead-generation platform.
It is a carefully curated community of experienced strategic marketing leaders committed to professional excellence, commercial impact and collaboration.

Who we're looking for
Our Associates are trusted advisors to founders, CEOs, leadership teams, investors and private equity-backed businesses. They are experienced practitioners who can operate confidently in complex commercial environments and help organisations make better growth decisions.
More importantly, they believe in contributing to something bigger than their own individual practice. They want to help strengthen the profession, share knowledge, support fellow Associates and build a recognised network known for quality, integrity and strategic leadership.

Our two non-negotiable standards
As well as an enviable track-record of marketing leadership and transformation, every VCMO Associate must hold:
- Chartered Marketer Status: You must be a current Chartered Marketer and listed on the official Chartered Marketer Directory maintained by the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
- SOSTAC® Certified Planner: You must also hold current SOSTAC® Certified Planner accreditation.
These requirements are not simply qualifications. They are signals of professional commitment. They demonstrate a dedication to continuous development, recognised standards and strategic marketing excellence.
Without both credentials, we are unable to progress an Associate application.

VCMO isn't for everyone
If you're looking for a quick way to win more clients, VCMO probably isn't the right network for you. There are many excellent consultant directories, recruiter networks and lead-generation platforms designed specifically for that purpose.
Our Associates join for different reasons:
- They believe that strategic marketing leadership deserves the same professional recognition as finance, legal and HR leadership.
- They enjoy collaborating with other experienced practitioners.
- They contribute to thought leadership, research and education.
- They share ideas, challenge each other, and support one another.
- They collectively help strengthen the reputation of the profession.
Client opportunities naturally arise through that community. But they are a consequence of being an engaged and trusted Associate—not the reason the network exists.

Before you apply
Every prospective Associate begins by completing our confidential Associate Readiness Assessment.
The assessment evaluates six areas that helps us understand your:
- Commercial track record
- Board-level experience
- Strategic capability
- Fractional practice maturity
- Professional standards
- Alignment with the VCMO philosophy
More importantly, it helps determine whether we're the right fit for one another.
Because protecting the quality of the network is more important than growing it quickly.

More than a network
Being part of VCMO means becoming part of a growing professional community.
Associates have opportunities to:
✓ Collaborate on client engagements where appropriate.
✓ Contribute articles, research and thought leadership.
✓ Participate in podcasts, webinars and events.
✓ Share practical expertise with fellow Associates.
✓ Help develop new methodologies and frameworks.
✓ Contribute to the ongoing evolution of the VCMO proposition.
✓ Support the wider advancement of strategic marketing leadership.
We believe the strongest professional communities are built through contribution—not competition.

Absolutely. There are no exclusivity clauses. Many Associates combine their own portfolio with VCMO engagements, using our brand to win higher-value work and extend their reach. Regard us as another channel to market.
Yes. All VCMO Associates must hold active Chartered Marketer status with the CIM. It’s a core differentiator of our brand and a signal of strategic competence to our clients.
Opportunities come from inbound prospect enquiries, client and investor referrals, and VCMO’s network. We match based on your sector expertise, engagement preferances, and the client’s objectives to ensure strong alignment.
VCMO operates a transparent revenue-share model for work sourced through our network. We retain a 10% management fee on the invoiced total for the duration of the engagement. You simply invoice VCMO for your work — we take care of client billing, contracts, and collections, leaving you free to focus on delivery.
Leaving the VCMO network is straightforward. If you no longer find value, simply provide 30 days’ written notice. Any outstanding invoices and approved expenses will be paid before your exit. Content you’ve contributed (blogs, podcasts, videos, etc.) will remain on our website. Your profile will be removed, and your access to VCMO’s server and email will be closed.
We can’t guarantee a set number of clients. Our content strategy is targeted to the ICPs in the business types and sectors we serve. Your own engagement — amplifying VCMO’s content through your personal channels — also plays a key role in generating awareness and demand.
No - this is fractional remember. Engagements are part-time and flexible, typically running from a few days per month to several days per week. You decide which opportunities you accept, ensuring balance with other work or commitments.
We primarily serve scaling B2B businesses (£2M–£30M+ turnover) and funded scale-ups, alongside private equity-backed companies. Engagements often involve GTM shifts, turnaround scenarios, scaling plans, or investor oversight.
We've built a dedicated landing page that answers all the common questions that founders, CEOs and investor have around the Fractional CMO proposition. Click the link below.
SOSTAC®, developed by PR Smith, was voted one of the Top 3 Business Models worldwide by the Chartered Institute of Marketing and is used by organisations such as LinkedIn and KPMG. It underpins our strategic planning process, supported by other proven models to provide a full situational analysis. To maintain consistency and quality across the VCMO network, we require evidence of SOSTAC® Certified Planner or Trainer accreditation before joining as a VCMO Associate. To become accredited, there is an online course which takes around 20 hours with a 1-hour exam. The cost is £234 including VAT (£195 for non-UK residents).
